The Roots of Our Crown

Did you know the average person sheds 80-100 strands of hair a day? We know what you’re probably thinking: who ain’t running a comb, brush or some moisturizer through their hair?! But what if we told you it’s just a natural part of your hair’s growth cycle?

If you’re not a haircare pro, then the science of your strands has probably never crossed your mind. However, if someone’s ever said, “Your hair grows fast,” or you’ve wondered why your hair only grows a certain length, then your scalp got the tingling with curiosity. The answer: it’s the natural dynamic of your cycle. While we all go through the same stages of the hair growth cycle, as they say in ads, results may vary.

Our Three Gens

There are three stages to everyone’s hair growth cycle. Each one has its place and time. We’ll call them the Our Three Gens. The first stage is anagen, where hair strands are formed within the attached follicle. Anagen can take up to six months to complete, and hair can be in this growing state for 3-7 years.

Then, there’s catagen, where our hair strands separate from the dermal papilla and are pushed up and out from the follicle. The dermal papilla is a pretty big deal as it’s a key hair nutrient and means of blood supply at our roots.

Lastly, there’s telogen, where your hair has shed, and your follicles become inactive before the cycle begins again. You can be in the telogen stage for three months.

Are you roots tingling from all this under-the-surface hair knowledge? See what we did there? We hope so, because there’s absolutely nothing wrong with knowing a lil’ somethin’ somethin’ about the crown that sits atop your head.
