Can you smell that? It’s hoodies, boots and sweet potato spice season. Is that a thing? Cinnamon season, maybe? Anywho, it’s fall, y’all, and the temps are soon about to take a dip. And you know what that means—the clash of dry times.
Cold weather can be brutal on your natural hair if you don’t protect it. Dry air can strip our hair of its natural moisture. That’s why it’s take-the-chicken-out-the-freezer-when-ya-mama-told-you important to keep your hair hydrated! Increase those wash days and add these to-dos to this season’s toolkit for healthy hair.
Honey, We Need to Talk
Did you know honey is a great way to protect you from catching a case of dry scalp? Honey is a humectant or ingredient that attracts and promotes water retention in your hair. You can use honey during any part of your wash day routine as a natural remedy for scalp care.
Glycerin is another humectant that does wonders for the natural hair community, especially those rocking natural curls. It is often found in many everyday hair care products, so make sure you keep your cabinet stocked for the days ahead.
Speaking of natural hair care remedies, join us on Instagram on Tuesday, October 8, at 7 PM for Roots & Remedies: Herbal Hair Growth. Our in-studio trichologist and stylist, Claudia, will discuss some of nature’s finest solutions for healthy scalp and hair.
Cover up, Baby
Somebody’s mama or auntie is always asking, “Why that baby ain’t got on no hat?” as soon as leaves start falling. Well, baby, they’re right! Hats are a great way to protect your scalp when you’re out and about, providing much-needed warmth. And bonus points if your hat is lined with satin. If you sleep with a satin bonnet, scarf or pillowcase, this is probably a no-brainer. But we love a good textured hair care lesson time 😉
Satin lining allows our hair to retain its natural moisture and keeps loc’d, twisted and loose hair healthy and lint-free. With many brands catering to the culture, satin-lined hats come in many styles for cute, casual or even date night wear.
Protect Ya Edges
Or whatever Wu-Tang once said. Protective styles, like knotless braids, Marley twists, and feed-in cornrows, bring that get-it-and-forget-it energy to the fall and winter months. If you turn into a Hibernation Hottie as soon as it starts getting dark at 4:59 PM, protective styles can be your BFF. There’s nothing worse than getting a fresh ‘do and boom, it’s raining every day but Monday 🙄 Whether layered up in a raincoat or frolicking in mist, no damage to your edges or ends will prosper.
Now, just because it’s a little nippy out doesn’t mean you should skip moisturizing your scalp. Showing your scalp some love is the key to healthy protective styles during the cold months. Regularly hydrate your scalp with hair oils or leave-in conditioners between braid installs and take-downs.
